Tommie Douglas, the most beloved Canadian

As Premier of Saskatchewan, Tommie Douglas created the first Medicare system on the North American continent. Canada's national government soon followed suit, and Lyndon Johnson created a bastardized version of Medicare here in the U.S. based upon the Saskatchewan model.

In 2006, Tommie Douglas was voted the most beloved Canadian of all time .

The Canadian Broadcasting System aired a three hour mini-series titled "Prairie Giant" about Tommie Douglas's life in late 2005. The film proved to be one of my absolute favorites in recent memory. It also portrayed an effective socialist in such a positive light that the "powers that be" decided to stop all distribution of the DVD and halt the showing of the film in schools across Canada. Apparently "Prairie Giant" has proven to be be the real Inconvenient Truth...

More to follow.... Excuse our dust.
